My wife Hilary andI were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we saw a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.

Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!\" An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. Thebear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.

I held my camera tripod(三脚架)in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew 1 would not be able to hold it for long.

Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.

The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.

Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back towards-the forest, before returning for another attack the first time I felt panic.

Obviously satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. I'm proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome. 1. How did the writer feel when faced with the brown bear? A. Fearful but confident. B. Nervous but brave. C. Upset but determined. D. Awful but hopeful. 2. The bear finally went away after it

A. got injured B. felt safe

C. found some food D. took away the camera 3. What does the author want to tell us? A. We should keep calm when troubles come

B. We should rise to the challenge when faced with difficulties. C. We should not risk ourselves in some dangerous areas.

D. We should learn to take advantage of anything at hand when in trouble.

When you say the word donkey, whatthings come to your mind? A few people might say they’re cute, but the majority think they’re stubborn, dumb and all-round less capable than their horse s.

However, this wasn’t the case for a recently unearthed ancient Chinese noblewoman who was unexpectedly found buried with her donkeys. Published in the journal Antiquity in March, Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) first discovered the tomb in Xi’an, Shaanxi, in 2012. The team examined the remains and identified the body as Cui Shi, a Tang Dynasty high-born lady who died in 878 AD.

Speaking to Science Magazine in 2012, the study’s co-author, Fiona Marshall, said the finding caused confusion as “donkeys … are not associated with high-status people”.

However, following years of further research, the team discovered artworks and artifacts that showed a sport known as “Lvju”. This was similar to modern-day polo (马球)and was popular among noble (高贵的) women at the time. They preferred to use donkeys instead of full-sized horses for safety reasons, due to their smaller size and slower speed.

Speaking to CNN, Marshall later said, “Historical documents also showed that ladies of the late Tang court loved to play donkey polo.”

At that time in Chinese history, animals were often placed in tombs so that they could be used for a specific purpose in the afterlife. The study determined that Cui Shi likely requested that her beloved donkeys be buried with her, so that she could continue her favorite sport after death. In total, three donkeys were found inside her tomb with riding gear (装备), including stirrups (马镫). “This context provides evidence that the donkeys in her tomb were for polo, not transport,” lead author Hu Songmei of the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology told Science Magazine.

Before the study, it was believed that donkeys were only used to carry loads, but now it may be time to see them as a sign of achieving high social status(地位), well, in ancient times.

4. What do most people think of donkeys, according to the text?

A. They are as adorable(可爱的) as horses. B. They are stubborn and not so capable. C. They were necessary in ancient sports. D. They were a sign of high social status. 5. Why did Fiona Marshall feel confused when she discovered the donkeys? A. She didn’t connect donkeys with nobles. B. She hadn’t seen donkeys in ancient tombs before. C. She didn’t expect to find donkeys in a woman’s tomb. D. She didn’t understand why animals were in human tombs. 6. What do we know about the sport “Lvju” from the text? A. Horses were preferred in Lvju. B Lvju was similar to modern-day soccer. C. Lvju was popular among common people. D. Donkeys were preferred in the sport for safety.

7. The donkeys were found in the tomb of Cui Shi probably because _______. A. she intended to use them for transport after death B. her family didn’t want her to be lonely after death C. she wanted to continue to play Lvju after death D. noble women needed donkeys to maintain their dignity

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students inAuckland,New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar that appears on the student’s desktop, or smartphone screen, when ordered to come.

The autonomous animation platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach Vector’s “Be sustainable with energy”— a free program forAucklandelementary schools.

Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’ responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal cues. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way interaction not only helps attract the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their

engagement, and make changes if needed.

Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver cost-effective, rich, educational experience in the future.”

The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “ What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon.

8. What was special for some elementary school students inAuckland? A. A digital teacher taught them. B. They first saw something digital. C. This was the start of a new school year. D. They could get close to smartphone screen. 9. What is the benefit of this two-way interaction?

A. It can smile back. B. It can use microphone.

C. It can talk any topic for free. D. It can change if necessary. 10. What’s Ravishankar’s attitude to Will’s replacing Human educators soon? A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Disapproving. 11. What might be the best title for the passage? A. New High-tech Contributes to Education

B. The World’s First Digital Teacher Appears in Classroom. C. The World’s First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students D.New ZealandWill Replace Teachers in Classrooms

D

Have you ever done something that was really dangerous just because you thought it was safe?Maybe you did a dangerous trick on your bicycle or skateboard because you were wearing a helmet and thought you couldn’t get hurt. The psychology(心理) of this sort of behavior is called the Peltzman Effect, named after Sam Peltzman, professor of economics at the University of Chicago. Peltzman believes that those moments when people think they are the safest are the times when they act most dangerously.

Peltzman said that people drove more dangerously when they wore seat belts(安全带) . Driving a large four-wheel drive vehicle has a similar effect on drivers’ behavior. Because drivers of large vehicles sit up higher and can see better, they feel they can make better judgments when they drive. They are better protected in accidents,so they act more dangerously. This makes driving morehazardousto other drivers.

The Peltzman Effect isn’t just limited to driving. In 1972, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) passed a law requiring child safety caps on most medicine bottles. The safety caps were designed to prevent children from accidentally taking the medicine, especially painkillers such as aspirin. Requiring safety caps sounded like a great idea, but there was an unexpected side effect. Because the safety caps are so hardto take off, some people leave them off altogether.

Worse, some parents leave the bottles where kids can reach them because they feel that it is safe because of the cap. A study on the Peltzman Effect showed that more than 3,500 children have been harmedby aspirin because of the safety caps.

The Peltzman Effect describes how we’re likely to take more risks and act more dangerously when we feel safest. What’s more, the effects of these behaviors can be quite different from what we expect. 12. What is the Peltzman Effect?

A. People behave less safely when they feel safe. B. People feel safest when they are under protection. C. Something that seems dangerous turns out to be safe. D. People who act dangerously are likely to be together.

13. What does the underlined word“hazardous”in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Interesting. B. Expensive. C. Dangerous. D. Important. 14. Medicine bottles with safety caps ________. A. are required throughout the world B. meet the demands of the Peltzman Effect C. sell well in the world D. are not completely safe

15. What would be the best title for the text? A. Unsafe Safety Measures B. Types of Decision Making

C. People’s Fear of Taking Risks

D. Different Behaviors of People in Danger
