Speaking Module (10-15 minutes)

1. PART 1The examiner asks the candidate about him/herself, his/her home, work or studies and other familiar topics.★Studies— Do you work or are you a student?— Why did you choose to study English?— Do you like your school?— Is there anyone who helps you with your studies at school?— Do you often get together with your class mates after classes?★Films— What kinds of films do you like to watch?— Are these kinds of films/movies popular in your country?— Who is your favourite actor or actress?— Would you like to be a film star?★Food and cooking— What is your favourite food or meal?— Do you like to cook?— Who usually cooks in your home?— Are there any kinds of food that you do not like?

正确答案:★Studies— I’m a student. I study English at a private school in Guangzhou. I’ve been there for almost six months.— Well, like most people taking this test in China, I’d like to study abroad. I’d prefer to study in Australia and obviously English is necessary to get into universities there.— To be honest, I don’t like it very much. The building is very nice but the facilities inside are not very good at all. Next time I choose a school, I’ll be careful to ask about the facilities in more detail. The teachers at the school are quite good they are certainly very enthusiastic but without the equipment to support them, they can’t do as good a job as they are capable of.— The teachers are very helpful. They suggest some ways of improving our English faster. I also meet two friends once or twice a week. One is Chinese and the other is a Canadian. We go out and talk in English. I find that to be really helpful. I know that I can learn a lot in class, but there’s nothing to beat real-life practise.— No, I don’t. To be honest, I find them quite boring. They don’t like to take the teachers’ advice and practise outside the classroom. They also like to complain a lot and I don’t want to be around people with such a negative attitude.★Films— I like documentaries and films that are based on true stories. Like many people, 1 find that the real world is often stranger than the fictional ones created by writers and directors. I’m very interested in history, so you won’t be surprised to know that my favourite film is Schindler’s List.— I think that a lot of older people like watching them, but younger people prefer romantic films and action films. I think that people’s tastes in films change as they get older and they become more interested in the real world.— My favourite actress is Zhang Zi Yi. I admit that find her very attractive, not only talented. She has made several very good films. A good actor or actress needs to be able to portray a range of emotions on screen and I think she does this perfectly. In recent years, she and Gong Li have been constantly compared and you can often find people who are interested in films discussing which of them is the more talented and which of them is the more attractive.— That would be great! I’d have to attend a

really acting school first, since my acting abilities are not so good. I know that being an actor would be very hard work, but I’d love meeting some famous people and going to some awards ceremonies and parties. Of course, the money would be nice too!★Food and cooking— I know that you might think I’m crazy, but honestly, my favourite food is hamburgers. I love them! I like the kind that you can get at American fast food places, but I think that I can make better ones at home. I put on plenty of salad and some cheese. Sometimes they are taller than they are wide! My friends think they’re pretty good too.— I really enjoy cooking and I think that I can cook many dishes well. My father worked as a chef for a few years and now owns his own restaurant. Sometimes, I would go to watch him cooking and try to help a little. I seriously considered following my father into the catering industry, but I decided that, for me, it was more of a hobby than a career.— I live alone, so I cook for myself. The equipment in my kitchen is modem, so I can cook whatever I want--whether Chinese food or something originating from abroad. However, I don’t cook every day. Sometimes, I go to a restaurant near my home or school and other times I meet my friends for dinner before going to a bar or cafe.— I can’t think of anything. My Canadian friend calls me the human dustbin, the first time he did that, I was a little offended, but now I know it was a friendly joke--and absolutely tree! Whenever we are out, I stop at a stall in the street and buy a snack. If it’s something I haven’t tried before, that’s even better!

2. PART 2Tell me about something you own which is useful or important to you.You should say: --what the thing is and how you got it; --why it is useful or important to you; --if it is also important or useful to others and say how your life would be harder without this thing. You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

正确答案: My bike is very important and useful for me. 1 use it mainly to ride to and from school each day and I also ride it some weekends if I go to the countryside. As I only live a short distance from my school, it doesn’t tire me out and sometimes it’s faster than going by car because of the traffic jams. On a bike, it’s easy to wind in and out of the traffic. Of course, there is the problem of breathing in the fumes from the idling cars. My bike was originally blue, but much of the paint has come off and it is quite dirty. I don’t mind that because it is far less likely to get stolen if it looks old. Even though the bike looks to be in bad condition, I keep the brakes and tyres in the best condition I can. I also have a small basket on the front, which I use to carry books or shopping.

3. PART 3Discussion topic: PossessionsExample questions:— What kinds of possessions are important to people in modern Chinese society?— Do men and women like to have the same kinds of possessions?— In the future, what possessions do you think that people will value most?— If you could possess any item in the world, what would you choose?

正确答案:— I think that the four most important possessions for Chinese people nowadays are houses, cars, computers and mobile phones. Houses and cars are the big status symbols and some people will spend almost all their money on them, just to look more important than they actually are, The fact that cars are such an important status symbol has helped to create traffic problems in most big cities. Computers are status symbols, even though most people in cities can buy them. I think they show that a person is up-to-date with the latest technology. The latest mobile phones are often considered extremely cool, so people will sometimes buy one, then discard it only a year later for a newer, cooler model. I sometimes wonder if that is how some people treat their boyfriends and girlfriends!— I think that they generally do. Both men and women like to have nice cars and trendy mobile phones. Both sexes also like to wear the latest fashions, although obviously men go for suits and ladies go for dresses. Ladies like jewellery as a symbol of status and wealth. Men don’t usually wear necklaces or bracelets, but they do wear watches. I think that, if you want to appear well off and trendy, there are certain things that you must have.— I think that nice homes and the latest electronic gadgets will still be the most valued possessions. I think that attractive clothes and jewellery will also remain valued. I mean, they have been for hundreds of years and I doubt that will change. I think that it is also possible that people will value hand-crafted and traditional items rather than mass-produced items, because mass-produced items will be so common.— I would like to have an expensive aviator’s watch, hand made in Switzerland. I think it would be great to have a small status symbol like that something that people could notice and comment on, but not something that everyone can see instantly.
