The owner of a clothing shop had just hired two assistants and he wanted to see how polite his assistants were. He dressed himself as a tramp and went into his shop. He asked to see an expensive suit in the window. Glancing at him scornfully, one shop assistant refused him rudely , replying that the suit was so expensive that only rich men could afford it . Then, the shop owner turned to the other assistant and asked whether she could select a cheap suit for him. She smiled politely and said, “Sorry, sir. There might be no proper suit in our shop for you. If you don’t mind, please allow me to show you to another shop. Perhaps you will find suitable clothes there.”Hearing this, the

boss nodded with satisfaction. The first assistant didn’t appear in the shop the next day.

W: I don’t know. I haven’t taken it. Can you take my temperature now, sir?

M: May I help you?

W: The collar on this jacket is too small. Can you make it larger?

M: Let me look at it. I can do it for twenty dollars. Text 3

M: I can come to your house and pick you up in half an hour. Is it all right?

W: Good. That means you will be here at 8:30. Text 4

W: May I have a look at your newspaper? I just want to know whether it will be rainy tomorrow because Ann is going to teach me how to play tennis then.

M: OK, here you are. Text 5

M: I have been waiting here for about half an hour. Why did you take so long to park the car? W:I’m sorry. I had to drive two blocks before I found a place to park.

Text 6

W:David, you can play the guitar, can’t you?

M:I have played for about six years. But I haven’t practiced it much since I went to college. Why do you ask?

W:I’m singing for a group that meets every Wednesday.

We have several piano and violin players, but not one guitar player.

M:Who is directing the group? W:Janet Pearson.

M:Well, I’m afraid I need a lot of practice before I can play before an audience.

W:Don’t wo rry about that. Miss Pearson will teach you if necessary.

M:Then I think I can have a try.

W:I’m sure you’ll be just fine. I expect to see you next Wednesday.

Text 7 W: Hey, taxi! M: Can I help you?

W: Yes. I’d like to go to the airport, please. M: Well, just get in and sit down. Here, let’s go.

W:Could you please drive a little faster? I’m taking the 10:15 plane to Washington.

M: I’m sorry, but it’s not allowed. Don’t you see the police by the roadside?

W:I’m afraid that I will be late for my plane. M: Take it easy. You see, it is still 9:15. W: How long is it from here to the airport?

M: I’m not sure exactly. But I’m sure I can get there in half an hour.

W:That would be fine. I hope I won’t be late. Text 8

W: Five or six hours.

M:Say you leave at four thirty after work and you’ll be there around nine or ten.

W:I suppose so. And we could still have a good night’s sleep. M: What are you going to take? W: Mostly shorts and T-shirts.

M: Don’t you think it’s going to be a bit cold at night at the seaside?

W:Maybe, so I’ll take a sweater or a light coat just in case. M: Hope you have a good time there. Text 9

M: When shall I go on holiday?

W: When do you want to go? You can go in spring, summer, autumn or winter.

W: How long will you be away? M: For three weeks.

W:Look! Here’s a good holiday in Italy. From the 10th of May to the 1st of June.

M:All right. I’d like to go on that trip. Text 10

A report published last year showed that most people do not do enough exercise. It is said that in 1995, 60 percent of people walked more than one mile a day. But now the number has fallen greatly to only 20 percent. Although more people are going to

the gym, fewer and fewer people are walking. Doctors say we all need to exercise for 20 minutes three times a week if we want to be healthy. Walking is an easy form of exercise that everyone can do. If you keep walking one mile each day, you will improve your health very quickly. Of course, there are many other methods to exercise, so we can find the best suitable ways for ourselves. Doctors say we need to try to make people healthier because not doing enough exercises causes many health problems. They also suggest we go for a walk every day after dinner.
