Unit 3 A taste of English humor
Good afternoon, everyone! It’s my great pleasure to be here sharing my lesson with you. I’ll talk about this lesson from five parts:Analysis of the teaching material and objects, the teaching methods, the studying methods, the teaching procedure.
Part1. Teaching material and objects
The content of my lesson is new senior English for China, student’s book 1, unit 3. This lesson is the second period of Unit 3. and it’s a reading lesson. The purpose of this reading is to introduce the life and work of Charlie Chaplin and his excellent performance in his silent films. It plays a very important part in teaching of this unit. So if the students can learn this lesson well, it will be helpful to make the students learn the rest of this unit. They can learn more about the humor especially English humor. Such topic is related to our daily life, so it is helpful to raise learning interests of students and it will be easier to get knowledge in their laughter.
1.Knowledge objects:
2.a)Make the students be aware of the cultural aspects of humor by learning this lesson.
b)Enable students to learn what humor means and what is nonverbal humor.
c)Ensure the students can understand and use the new words and expressions.
2. Ability objects:
a)To make the students realize that humor is to let people be optimistic about

everything.
b)To develop the Students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
c)To improve the student’s reading ability, especially their skimming and scanning ability.
3. Moral objects:
a)To enable the students to learn to be faced with difficulties and overcome them.
b)To encourage them to keep optimistic attitude towards life and improve their sense of humor.
4.Important points and difficult points:
4.1 Teaching key points
a)Help the students grasp the important words and phrases in the text.
b)Help the students to learn to get information, analyze the information and understand the information from the text.
4.2 Teaching difficulties
a)How to fire the students’ enthusiasm to express their ideas.
b)To make the students know the acting style of Charlie Chaplin and understand the

connotation of humor.
Part2. Teaching Methods
According to the analysis of the teaching material and the students’ learning background, I
will mainly use the following methods.
Double activities teaching method; Question-and-answer activity teaching method;
Watch-and-listen activity
Teaching aids:computer and the blackboard
Part3. Teaching procedures
StepⅠ Warming up (2minutes)
Brainstorming: Get students to find out the names of comedy actors according to the pictures given,such as Mr. Bean ,Zhou Xingchi ,and Zhao Benshan.Next some pictures of Charlie Chaplin will be shown on the screen and the I will tell the students that they will get to know more about Charlie Chaplin.Then I will give a short vide about his work.
Step Ⅱ Words and expressions(1 minutes)
New words and expressions will be shown on the screen,and I will read the words first and ask the students to read after me.

Step Ⅲ Reading
I. Skimming for fist (5minutes) First I will introduce Charlie Chaplin briefly, who was a great silent movie star of his time. And then ask the students to read the passage quickly to find out the main ideal of each paragraph ,then do the match.
This method is used to train the student to get the general idea of the passage. And it is also a good chance for them to improve their skimming skills.
II. Scanning for specific information (10minutes) I will ask the students to read the whole passage by paragraph carefully and answer some detailed questions. It is also called depth reading or study reading. It means reading for detailed information. The purpose is to make the students understand the reading material better.
III. Thorough comprehension and discussion (4+6=10minutes) (Group work) 1. Get the students to read the passage between the lines and finish the multiple choices below and tell the reasons.
1) What does the word “reception” in paragraph2 mean?
A. meeting B. dinner C. speech D. welcome area (in a hotel)

2. Get students to tell the answers as well as the reasons.

Step Ⅳ Conclusion and questions from students (2+3minutes)
Ask 2 students to draw a conclusion of what he has learned in the passage and other students to raise some questions that they can't understand in the passage.
学生对本课所学内容的总结和提问,也是对学生个体学习的尊重。
