A Phonological Reconstruction of Initial Yi Derived
from Glottal Consonant

Zeng Yunqian proposed that the initial Yi (以母）originated from the initial Ding (定母）.
However, comprehensive evidence shows that this is not all the case because there is a portion of syllables with initial Yi is closely related to those with velar consonants (牙喉音）.The previous exploration by scholars has made great achievements, but there are differences in their sound reconstruction. This paper argues that those sounds with initial Yi that are closely related to velar consonants should be reconstructed as * fi-、* fiw-, which share the same phoneme with initial Xia (匣母）and Yun (云母）.The initials * fi-、* fiw- were merged into initial Xia when preceding non-Division III rhymes, while the initials * fir- and * fiwr- had turned into initial Yun and * fi- and * fiw- into initial Yi when they precede Division III rhymes. We also advocate that the initial Yi pronounced as fi- and h- or v- and f- in southern dialects reflects the ancient value * 揿-、* fiw- rather than an innovation change.
