(2018·全国卷Ⅱ)Many of us love July because it's the month when nature's berries and stone fruits are in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels from British Columbia's fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection.

Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein (蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares? However, they are rich in vitamin C.

When combined with berries or slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat “ice cream”, For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer.

If you have a_juicer,_you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries of sliced fruit. Out comes a “soft-serve” creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children's party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.

[答案] B

3.What is “a juicer” in the last paragraph? A.A dessert. C.A container.

B.A drink. D.A machine.

根据画线部分下文中的“they love feeding... into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below”可推断出,juicer应该是“榨汁机”的意思。

[答案] D

4.From which is the text probably taken?

A.A biology textbook. C.A research paper.

B.A health magazine. D.A travel brochure.

①The underlined word/phrase... probably means/can be replaced by ________.

②Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word/phrase...?

2.指代类

①What does the underlined word “this/that/it/they...” refers to ? ②The underlined part “this/that/it/they...” refers to ________. 3.句意类

①The underlined sentence in the... paragraph probably means ________.

②What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph...?

[典例1] (2018·山西重点中学协作体考试)In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping_points , such as the melting (融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or west Antarctica...

The underlined words “tipping points” most probably refer to “________”.

A.freezing points C.melting points

B.burning points D.boiling points

[解析] 本题要求猜测tipping points的意思,根据 “such as the melting (融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or west Antarctica” 可知,tipping points 在文中的意思为“融化点”,与C项同义,故C项为正确答案。

[典例2] (2018·山东菏泽联考)There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care.To water his flowers,he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.

What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean? A.Dirty.

B.Dark.

C.Worn-out. D.Plain-looking.

[解析] 由“one... the other...”结构可知,“old and dilapidated”对应前面的“shiny and new”。由此可判断dilapidated的意思应与shiny and new相反,即worn-out,故C项为正确答案。

表示对比关系的词语主要有however,but,instead,despite,unlike,yet,while,whereas(反之,而,却),rather than,instead of,in spite of,on the contrary,on the other hand,in contrast等。

[典例] (2017·全国卷Ⅲ)Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.

What does the underlined word “displaced” in this paragraph mean?

A.Tested. C.Forced out.

B.Separated. D.Tracked down.

In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of their canine lust.

But why, they pleaded. “Because I don't have time to take care of a dog.” But we'll do it. “Really? You're going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” Yes, yes, and yes. “I don't believe you.” We will.

We promise.

They didn't. From day two (everyone wanted to walk the cute puppy that first day), neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to schedule her vet appointments, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life (small, medium, and large), she calculated , “The_medium_one_is_the_sucker_in_the_pack.”

Which of the following is the closest in meaning to “The medium one is the sucker in the pack.” (Paragraph 3)?

A.“The middle-aged person loves me most.” B.“The medium-sized woman is the hostess.” C.“The man in the middle is the one who has the final say.” D.“The woman is the kind and trustworthy one in the family.”

仔细阅读题干可知,“The medium one is the sucker in the pack .”

[典例] (2016·四川卷)His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.

What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.The modern French lifestyle. B.The self-supporting hunting. C.The uncivilized hunting. D.The French Republic.

“it”为关键词,指代上文出现的名词,即指前面的 “the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic”,故选项A为正确答案。

[答案] A

David Rees runs a truly distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their pencils to perfection, using a variety of tools.

I know what you're thinking—is this a joke? The 39-year-old gets asked that question a lot. To clarify everything, he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he's actually providing a real service.

You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B pencils. After that,he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag, and an authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous object.

To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general sandpaper, pocket knives and even a special $450 sharpening machine. “It depends on what the customer wants to use his/her pencil for,” he says. That determines the most appropriate pencil-sharpening technique. Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.

$15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right? You're not the only one who feels that way, and David's unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But others will say, “This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise along with the business.”

David admits his trade is sort of unusual. But there are those who actually value his service, as is proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten.

“How do you account_for your remarkable achievements in life?” Queen Victoria of the UK asked Helen Keller. “How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf, you were able to achieve so much?”

Ms. Keller's answer is a tribute (致敬) to her kind teacher. “If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”

According to American speaker Zig Ziglar,Anne Sullivan was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless and was, at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly “insane” by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement of a mental institution. Occasionally, Anne would violently

attack anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in her presence.

An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her work to show love to the child. Every day she visited Anne, and she left cookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Anne could recover, if only she were shown love.

Eventually, doctors noticed the change in the girl. Where they once witnessed anger and hate, they now noted gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless” child was released.

Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined (管教) her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the flickering candle that was her life became a beacon (灯塔) of light to the world. Anne Sullivan worked wonders in Helen's life; but it was a loving nurse who first believed in little Anne and lovingly transformed an uncommunicative child into a kind teacher.

“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.” But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan would have remained unknown.

Some people are so rude!

Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don't these people realize that they're wasting your time?

Maybe I'm the rude one for not appreciating life's little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don't make sense to people drowning in digital communication.

In texts, you don't have to declare who you are or even say hello. E-mail, too, is slower than a text. Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.

My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated,_he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mail?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”

In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business's phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.

How to handle these differing standards? Easy. Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. Others, like me, want no reply.

The anthropologist (人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.

(2018·石家庄高三质量检测一)Ireland's Achill Island has always been a popular European tourist destination. However, since April in 2017, the small island of just 2,700 residents (居民) has gained worldwide fame thanks to the magical return of a beach that was washed away over three decades ago.

The chain of events began in 1984 when residents of Dooagh, one of the settlements on the island, awoke to a surprising sight: their beautiful sandy beach had been washed away by strong Atlantic storms. There were only rocks and rock pools left. For about 34 years, only small amounts of sand returned to the once unspoiled shores. The area's tourism industry slowly declined, and the handful of beachside hotels, pubs, and restaurants gradually closed as well.

Then around Easter in 2017, something magical happened—an unusual ten-day tide blanketed the barren 300-meter long rock beach with hundreds of tons of soft golden sand. Scientists suspect that the sand had been gathering offshore for months and was transported to the beach by the high winds and powerful waves.

The locals are delighted to have their beach back, especially as it is attracting thousands of visitors wishing to witness the power of nature, with their own eyes. However, Sean Molloy, manager at Achill Tourism, cautions against going into the cold waters just yet, saying, “Because of the sand coming in, we don't know how safe the beach is now because currents (水流) could be changed and it'll take a little bit of time.” He

instead recommends visitors enjoy the soft sand and leave the swimming to the dolphins that frequent the area.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Dooagh Beach has pulled a disappearing and reappearing act. It disappeared in the 10s, for over 30 years, before returning in 1927. However, the locals are optimistic that this time around, the beautiful sand is here to stay.
