When I was a child living in the suburb, something terrible happened to my family. On a chilly night, my grandfather and uncle were suddenly taken to the detention house without any procedure or warning. My family and I were astonished by this sudden terror and unpredictable violence. In such a short time, we barely lost two important members and the usually tranquilization of our family. Fortunately, grandfather and uncle were both acquitted at last, and the family was back to its normal. In spite of that, this unbearable experience still remains in my childhood memory. From then on, as long as the eldership asked “why” in front of an impenetrable event, I will also ask my self what on earth are the justice and reason.
I didn’t get a chance of the legal science education until I went into the university. I took the jurisprudence and constitution courses on the first day of my school. During the classes, two professionals invariably brought up the issue of constructing the legal science education system. Our system was designed to start general law science education for the undergraduates. The most important thing is to foster their professional interest at this period. When the undergraduates mastered the general structure of the law science, they can pursue further study at postgraduate period if they want. Personally speaking, this system is quite reasonable, and I can really learn a lot. We acquired much knowledge in various aspects, especially aspect of the law. I built my knowledge frame on the basis of jurisprudence, which formed the foundation of the legal origin. Later through the study of logistics, the Chinese and foreign ancient law ideology, constitutional jurisprudence and many other courses about law practice, I enhanced my understanding of the law. I joined the specialty classes with Japanese language
ability so that I can learn new kinds of laws and open my international vision. For I know that continental law system is not perfect, I’m inclined to learn more about the common law system for comparative analysis.
My law school attaches great importance to the international background and academic performance. In my specialty class, I majored in both law and Japanese, and learned some basics about Japanese law theories. Under the guidance of teachers, we organized branches of social practice groups to conduct long-time investigation, collecting statistics, searching theory fundamentals and writing final reports concerning our research subjects on different academic topics. Fro example, in freshman year, we conducted research on The Harm And Influence From The Family Violence In Urban And Country Regions Of China. In sophomore
year, students who are interested in the judge discretion carried out social practice on what and how non-legal factors affect the discretion power of judges in the criminal cases. Later on I spent my summer vacation to research on internalize the
law in order to make preparation for further study. With my strong curiosity on commercial law and education of Asian-Americans, I took UCLA curriculum during the summer vacation. Though I was not in the formal law class, this experience had confirmed my determination of studying abroad.
In fact, I'm also enthusiastic about legal research. With the help of my teacher, I finished the Coursework in translation of Basic Principles of reformed Japanese Law of Obligation in collaboration with the students, and carried out a Class
research on the comparison of Civil Terminology between Japanese and Chinese Civil Law, and, unquestionably, benefited a lot. Besides, my critical thinking
reflected in the Focus On Ecological Interests In Tort Of The Compensation For Environmental Damage also obtained the corresponding recognition awards in
the Call for Papers. In 2012 and 2013, I finished the major-related internship in the Chinese capital Beijing and my hometown. Drafting documents and collating database, make simple translation of transacts/ Assisting clients in dealing with complex legal and business challenge, giving consulting advices and cooperating with lawyers to gather information and data, all of these practice work make me have a touch of their focal points and help me nail down the focus of study which is “learning for practice”.
After four years of university life, I felt deeply that further study of law is very necessary. First, from my own experience, what undergraduates obtained at this period is the general knowledge and basic learning ability. Consequently I want to learn more at the postgraduate period. Second, Chinese school lay particular stress on the continental law, but lacking emphasis on precedent law. So I want to take advantage of this opportunity to expand my view and be a composite talent who know well about both Chinese and foreign laws. Third, law is a useful tool to coordinate conflicts among different economic and cultural circles. If we don’t have the basic understanding of laws in other countries, we won’t reach agreement in economy and culture exchange. Therefore it’s urgent that we young students should learn abroad to equip ourselves with international insight. Fourth, American is known for its advanced legal system. As a student in a developing country, I want to bring this system to China to promote China’s legal reform and facilitate the whole construction of a lawful and democratic society. Finally, I’m sure that study in your prestigious school will elevate my academic
level and enhance my competence in my future career.
In order to achieve my career plans, I will try hard in following aspects: first of all, I will schedule my courses in accordance with the school requirement and my professional interest. I will fulfill the designed minimal credit and use the spare time to take courses about economy, intellectual property, contract and so on. In the second place, I will enhance my ability of oral discussion and legal writing. Now that I have the basic knowledge of American law system, I will compare it with the continental law theory using the research ways I’ve learned to comprehend more of them. Furthermore, if I’m admitted, I will make full use of the rich resources in school and society to find out convincible theoretical support for my previous research, and will also consult teachers and students to put forward new legal research subjects. Finally, I’d like to participate in extracurricular activities via students’ union. On the one hand, I can adapt myself to the new environment quickly through mutual interaction with the natives; on the other hand, I can improve my speaking and writing abilities to achieve my study goals. In my place, I hope admission officers and professors would provide me this valuable chance to achieve my profession objectives and career plans.
Then, why you choose that university? How would you contribute to the university’s development? (improve your contacts/ expand network; Networking)
(Highlighting individual abilities) Actually, I am a somewhat rational and persistent girl, and have established clear goals regarding the learning of legal knowledge. Although it’s not easy to grasp the philosophy of law, I still recognize
the importance of its spirit to the working of the social order. Thus, I sincerely hope that I can achieve my dream in your university to become not only a high level of lawyer but also a service provider for organizing society to achieve my career aspirations.
