I was talking with a friend a fewdays ago, who is pregnant with her first child. We were talking about 36 --- how our parents raised us, what we woulddo 37 with our children, what we would keep thesame. She was a little anxious about being a parent, about being 38 fora child and his or her life.
I remember saying to her, thatregardless of how perfectly she may try to 39 her child, the child will be screwed up(搞糟) anyway simply by his or her own interpretation and 40 of everything that happens in his or her life.
I told her a story that I heardat one of Tony Robbins' events. A story about two Vietnam war veterans who had 41 their friends and fellow soldiers in theVietnam war. Both fought in the same 42 , both witnessed the loss of theirfellow countrymen, both experienced the frightening act of taking someoneelse's 43 . And yet, after thewar was over, both led very different lives. 30 years 44 the war ended, one was depressed, lonely andsuicidal; the other happy and healthy, 45 by a loving family and close friends. So whatis the difference?
46 on his experience of the war in Vietnam, one man thought, “What is the 47 of being close to someone? I'll lose them 48 .” So he lived his life in bitternessand resentment, 49 of being close to anyone to avoid having tofeel the pain of losing them.
The other man, 50 , thought, “Life is precious. I have tolive it to the 51 and cherish every moment of it.” So he livedhis life in gratitude, 52 every moment he has with his loved ones. Whata big difference that made!
Nothing has meaning except the 53 you give it. You are responsible for givingmeaning to everything that has happened in your life. So, the question is,would you rather be like the first war veteran who lived his life with 54 , anger and fear? Or would you ratherbe like the second, who saw the lessons the war had 55 him and created a more empowering meaning forit?
36. A. cooking B.nursing C. parenting D. working 37. A.differently B. perfectly C. directly D.separately 38.A. respectable B. responsible C. acceptable D.accessible 39. A. prepare B.keep C.support D. raise 40. A. association B.expectation C. adaptation D. addiction 41. A. missed B.betrayed C. killed D. lost 42. A. unit B.war C.army D.country 43. A. money B. courage C.life D.account 44. A. since B.before C.until D.when
45. A. surrounded B.protected C. gathered D. understood 46. A. Reflected B.Advised C.Depended D. Based 47. A. grade B.point C.mark D.result 48. A. though B.too C.anyway D.somehow 49. Medical drugs sometimes cause more damage than they cure. One solution to this problem is to put the drugs inside a capsule, protectingthem from the body—and the body from them—until they can be released at justthe right spot. There are lots of ways to trigger this release, includingchanging temperature, acidity, and so on. But triggers can come with their ownrisks—burns, for example. Now, researchers in California have designed whatcould be a harmless trigger to date: shining near-infrared light (NIR, 近红外线) on the drugin the capsule.
The idea of using lightto liberate the drug in the capsule isn’t new. Researchers around the globehave developed polymers (聚合物) and other materialsthat begin to break down when they absorb eitherultraviolet (UV, 紫外线) or visible light. But tissues also readilyabsorb UV and visiblelight, which means the drug release can be triggered only near the skin, wherethe light can reach thecapsule. NIR light largely passes through tissues, so researchers have tried touse it as a trigger. Butfew compounds absorb NIR well and go through chemical changes.
That changed last yearwhen Adah Almutairi, a chemist at the University of California,San Diego, reported that she and her colleagues had designed a polymer that breaks downwhen it absorbs NIRlight. Their polymer used a commercially available NIR-absorbing group called o-nitrobenzyl(ONB). When they catch the light, ONB groups fall off the polymer, leading toits breakdown. But ONB is only a so-so NIR absorber, and it could be poisonous to cells whenit separatesfrom the polymer.
So Almutairi and her colleagues reported creating a newmaterial for capsules that’s even better. This one consists of a long chain ofcompounds called cresol groups linked in a polymer. Cresol contains reactive componentsthat make it highly unstable in its polymeric form, a feature Almutairi and hercolleagues use to their advantage. After polymerizing the cresols, they capeach reactive component with a light-absorbing compound called Bhc. When theBhcs absorb NIR light, the reactive groups are exposed and break the longpolymer into two short chains. Shining additional light continues thisbreakdown, potentially releasing any drugs in the capsule. What’s more,Almutairi says, Bhc is 10 times better at absorbing NIR than is ONB and is notpoisonous to cells.
56. Accordingto the passage, which of the following could be the best trigger?
A. Temperaturechange. B. NIR light. C. Acidity change. D. UV light. 57. Why isONB unsatisfactory?
A. It breaks down whenit absorbs NIR light. B. It falls off thepolymer and triggers drug release. C. It has not come ontothe market up till now. D. It is not effectiveenough and could be poisonous.
58. Whichword can be used to complete the following process of changes? Bhcs absorb NIR.→Part of the cresol is _______. → Polymer breaks down.
→Drug is released.
A. protected B. formed C. exposed D. combined

A less wellknown benefit of having great EQ is that it can help in effective stressmanagement, or in other words, to bring our stress to a comfortable level. Thisis the goal of many managers who feel that they are facing too much stress atwork. But how can Emotional Intelligence help in stress management?
Our emotions are goodindicators of our stress level. If we are aware of our own emotions, we canidentify the signs of unusually high stress earlier. Then we can take steps torelax or to control our emotions, and avoid further stress. For example, getting angry ten times in one single day at our team members, peers, or otherpeople we interact with is most likely not a sign that they have suddenlybecome more annoying or incapable. It is more likely to be a sign that ourlevel of stress has increased, and that our tolerance for anything that doesn'tgo our way has decreased.
Self-management,the second dimension of Emotional Intelligence, also helps decrease our stress.Self-management is our ability to prevent the waves of our negative emotionsfrom rising too high. An ex
ample of self-management is keeping our sadness oranger from reaching an intensity when we can not function and work normally, and when it can even be painful.
Such high emotional wavesfurther escalates stress in two ways. First, stress is expanded by the feeling that we are \"losingcontrol\". And then it can be accompanied by guilt…and even more stress.Secondly, decisions we make during these emotional waves are usually notwell-thought and usually bring us more trouble and more stress. For example, decisions we make during a period of anger can be expected to result in extrawork to repair \"additional damages\"。
Social awareness, the third dimension ofEmotional Intelligence decreases stress by lessening interpersonal conflicts inthe workplace. One serious conflict with one of our team members or peers caneat up a large amount of our energy and result in a lot of stress.
How exactlydoes better social awareness lead to fewer conflicts? Social awareness is theability to recognize emotions in other people, and to handle themresourcefully. In situations when conflicts can easily arise, this skill isparticularly useful. By identifying the emotions in our counterpart and thenacknowledging these emotions, we can prevent a disagreement from turning intoan open personal conflict. As a conclusion, if youare feeling that you are too stressed, I encourage you to look at how you coulddevelop your Emotional Intelligence further.
63. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word“escalates” in Paragraph 4?
A. Decreases. B. Raises. C. Relieves. D. Substitutes. . In how many ways does great EQ help in stress management?
A. 5. B. 4. C. 3. D. 2.
65. What do we know from the passage?
A. Getting angry 10 times a dayat other people indicates that they’re annoying. B. Decisions made duringemotional waves can be thoughtless and regrettable. C. Social awareness can removeinterpersonal conflicts in the workplace. D. When we are feeling toostressed, we had better look at our EQ level.

The months and years went by. Ihad been Joe’s apprentice for four years.
One evening, Joe and I weresitting in the village inn. A stranger came in, a big, tall man, with heavyeyebrows. The man had large, very clean white hands. To my surprise, Irecognized the man. I had seen him at Miss Havisham’s many years before. He hadfrightened me then. He frightened me a little now.
“I think there is a blacksmithhere --- name of Joe Gargery,” the man said in his loud voice. “That’s me!” Joe answered. Hestood up.
“You have an apprentice, known asPip,” the stranger went on. “Where is he? ” “Here! ” I cried, standing besideJoe.
“I wish to speak to you both. Iwish to speak to you privately, not here,” the man said. “Perhaps I could gohome with you.”
We walked back to the workshop insilence. When we were in the sitting room, the man began to speak.
“My name is Jaggers,” he said. “Iam a lawyer in London, where I am well-known. I have some unusual business with young Pip here. I amspeaking for someone else, you understand. A client who doesn’t want to benamed. Is that clear?”
Joe and I nodded.
“I have come to take yourapprentice to London,”the lawyer said to Joe. “You won’t stop him from coming I hope?”
“Stop him? Never!” Joe cried.
“Listen, then. I have thismessage for Pip. He has --- great expectations!” Joe and I looked at each other, too surprised to speak.
“Yes, great expectations,” Mr.Jaggers repeated. “Pip will one day be rich, very rich. Pip is to change hisway of life at once. He will no longer be a blacksmith. He is to come with meto London. Heis to be educated as a gentleman. He will be a man of property.”
And so, at last, my dream hadcome true. Miss Havisham --- because Mr. Jaggers’ client must be Miss Havisham--- had plans for me after all. I would be rich and Estella would love me!
Mr. Jaggers was speaking again.“There are two conditions,” he said, looking at me. “First, you will always beknown as Pip. Secondly,” Mr. Jaggers continued, “the name of your benefactor isto be kept secret. One day, that person will speak to you, face to face. Untilthen, you must not ask any questions. You must never try to find out thisperson’s name. Do you understand? Speak out!”
“Yes, I understand,” I answered.“My benefactor’s name is to remain a secret.”
“Good,” Mr. Jaggers said. “Now,Pip, you will come into your property when you come of age---when you aretwenty-one. Until then, I am your guardian. I have money to pay for youreducation and to allow you to live as a gentleman. You will have a privateteacher. His name is Mr. Matthew Pocket and you will stay at his house.”
I gave a cry of surprise. Some ofMiss Havisham’s relations were called Pocket. Mr. Jaggers raised his eyebrows.
“Do you not want to live with Mr.Pocket? Have you any objection to this arrangement?” he said severely.
“No, no, none at all,” I answeredquickly.
“Good. Then I will arrangeeverything,” Mr. Jaggers went on. “Mr. Pocket’s son has rooms in London. I suggest you gothere. Now when can you come to London?”
I looked at Joe.
“At once, if Joe has no objection,”I said. “No objection, Pip old chap,” Joeanswered.
“Then you will come in one week’stime,” Mr. Jaggers said, standing up. “You will need new clothes. Here is somemoney to pay for them. Twenty guineas.”
He counted the money and put iton the table.
“Well, Joe Gargery, you aresaying nothing,” Mr. Jaggers said to Joe firmly. “I have money to give to you, too.”
